Jinhae, located in the southernmost tip of Korean peninsular, is surrounded by Busan to the east, Gimhae as well as Changwon to the north and Masan as well as Geoje to the south across the Jinhae Bay. The total area of Jinhae is 113.12§“, corresponding to 1.1% of the gross area of the South Gyeongsan province(10,515.49§“). Within the total dimension, forest and field areas occupy 72.63§“ (64.2%), farmland area 12.89§“ (11.39%) and the rest counts for 27.60§“ (24.41%). As of December, 2005, it has the population of 158,624 with 55,170 households and is divided into 15 dongs.

Jinhae is a representative port city with coastal mild climate, which is a gift of nature. The average annual temperature is around 15.6”ĘC, while the average temperature during the month of January is around 2.3”ĘC and that during the month of August is around 27.2”ĘC. The difference over the year is 24.9”ĘC. The Jinhae region has 1,434mm of rainfall on average in 2005.

Jinhae has developed to the planned naval port city since Japanese naval ships anchored here after the Japanese invasion in 19th century. This is the first planned city of the radial road net constructed after the Japanese naval flag. Having the educational institutes of the army, the navy and the air forces and the navy headquarters after the independence and the Korean War, Jinhae continued to develop into the military city.

Although it is adjacent to Masan and Changwon, Jinhae was rather late in the development of the industries due to the feature of military city, except Jinhae Chemical fertilizer plant built in 1967. However, since 1987, when the navy headquarter law was loosened, Jinhae could build tall buildings. It also built the national industrial complex in Jinhae and Macheon and housed the shipbuilding-related industries. Jinhae is now expecting the development of factory land in Yongwon District following the construction of Noksan Industrial Complex in Busan. In December, 2005, the number of companies in Jinhae was 8,829 and the employees numbered 38,135. In 2006 alone, total trade amount in Jinhae recorded US$2,008 Million with US$1,443Million in exports and US$ 625 Million in imports.

Recently, Jinhae is vigorously facilitating the Jinhae New Port project and Free Economy Zone project to vitalize local economy and increase employment through balanced development of the nation.

Jinhae, filled with the spirit of Admiral Lee Sun-shin, is a place of blessed scenic beauty and the Mecca of cherry blossoms hosting 'Gunhangje (Naval Port Festival)' in spring every year, when many tourists gather here to see the cherry blossoms.
